German citizens aged 18 or over apply for a new biometric passport, which cannot be extended and must be replaced on expiry. First-time applicants who derive German citizenship from an ancestor use the same process with extra proof of descent.
Where to apply in Australia
Embassy Canberra (ACT) and Consulate General Sydney (NSW); honorary consuls in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne and Perth can accept some applications.
Honorary consuls accept applications for forwarding (flat fee EUR 102 in lieu of the basic fee on the passport pages) but do not handle visas or pensions; the Brisbane honorary consul is out of office through December 2026 (passports still accepted and forwarded to Sydney, other services unavailable). Online booking systems differ between posts.
Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Germany.
