All foreign visitors, including Australians, must obtain an ETA online at eta.gov.lk before arrival. From the rules applying since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA for Australians is free for 30 days with double entry; longer stays need an extension for a fee. Residence visas are sponsored from Sri Lanka and endorsed by the mission.

Where to apply in Australia

Online through the Sri Lankan government ETA site; the High Commission in Canberra and the Consulate-General in Melbourne issue entry visas for residence cases and certain categories (media, official, NGO).

Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Sri Lanka.

How to apply

Apply on eta.gov.lk (avoid third-party sites) | for residence visas, a Sri Lankan sponsor applies to the Immigration Department, after which the mission issues a 30-day single-entry visa to be converted in Sri Lanka | media crews apply at least 14 days ahead
