Check with the office. The official pages for this service leave out some details, or are older than a year. Use this page as a starting point and confirm fees and documents before you apply.

Finnish citizens in Australia apply in person at the embassy for a new or renewed Finnish passport or ID card (valid up to 5 years). The embassy does not take minors' ID cards that need no parental consent, or ID cards for foreigners.

Where to apply in Australia

Embassy of Finland, Yarralumla, Canberra (ACT), serving all of Australia; honorary consulates elsewhere in Australia do not issue visas.

Pop-up passport services (only for citizens living more than 600 km from Canberra) are occasionally held in other cities; the page at the time of reading listed only Auckland (July 2026). Past Australian missions were announced in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Finland.

How to apply

Book an appointment through the embassy booking link | bring a passport photo no older than 6 months | attend in person and pay the fee at submission | check beforehand that your details in the Finnish population system are current (corrections via DVV) | collect in person (or by an authorised person) or ask for delivery to another Finnish mission; postal return needs a prepaid registered envelope (ID cards may take longer)

Documents you need

Fees and processing time

Processing time: Ordinary passport about two weeks to several weeks plus delivery time; fast-track usually quicker.

Good to know

Two embassy fee pages give different AUD conversions for the same EUR fees (e.g. passport EUR 235 shown as AUD 384 and AUD 381) and neither shows an effective date; fees are paid in AUD at the Ministry's exchange rate, by Eftpos/Visa/MasterCard only. Customer service is by appointment only, Mon-Fri 9:30-12:30 (booking via the embassy's slotti.fi link); phone Mon-Thu 13:00-15:00; consular.CAN@gov.fi. Online (police e-service) applications are possible but any required identification visit must happen in Finland; collection only in Finland. Required-attachments page read today (no date shown). Postal return of the finished document is possible with a prepaid registered envelope, but the application itself is in person.
