Check with the office. The official pages for this service leave out some details, or are older than a year. Use this page as a starting point and confirm fees and documents before you apply.

First-time adults, those who cannot renew by mail, and those replacing a lost or stolen passport apply in person at a consulate on form DS-11. Passports are printed in the US and sent by Express Post, so there is no expedited option.

Where to apply in Australia

Consulates-General in Sydney (North Sydney, Suite 2, 50 Miller Street), Melbourne (553 St Kilda Road) and Perth (16 St George's Terrace); the Embassy in Canberra gives no consular services. Outreach visits cover Brisbane, WA, NT, SA and Tasmania (registration by email).

Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of the United States of America.

Good to know

Consulate adult-passport sub-page (au.usembassy.gov/passports/adult-passports/) returned an error on this date, so the document list is from the State Department's national 'apply in person' page and may not capture every consulate-specific step; fee page 17 May 2026; appointments page modified 23 Oct 2026. The US domestic acceptance fee does not apply in Australia (consulate fee page used).
