Civil registration: birth and marriage – Vietnam in Australia

Vietnamese citizen parents register the birth of a child born abroad within 60 days, and two Vietnamese citizens abroad can register their marriage at the embassy. The embassy registers only children holding Vietnamese nationality.

Where to apply in Australia

Embassy of Viet Nam, Canberra (ACT), which serves ACT, VIC and TAS; Consulate-General in Sydney serves NSW, QLD and SA and Consulate-General in Perth serves WA and NT (districts as stated on the renunciation page).

Embassy counter hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30-13:00, results collected same days 14:00-17:00. Booking via vietnamembassyinaustralia.setmore.com. Embassy pages give two street addresses (47 Culgoa Circuit and 6 Timbarra Crescent, O'Malley) and post address PO Box 98, Mawson ACT 2607; confirm before visiting. The pages describe only the Embassy's process; no Sydney or Perth service pages were fetched.

Birth: registration form and original proof of birth (or foreign birth certificate copy)
Parents' marriage certificate
Certified passport copies
Parent's Australian visa or foreign passport copy
Nationality-choice agreement if one parent is foreign
Marriage: form, passport copy, health certificate within 6 months, marital-status confirmation from the Vietnamese commune (valid 6 months), divorce or death documents where relevant

Processing time: Birth: about 15 working days excluding passport; marriage: 10 working days after complete documents.
