- Renunciation of Vietnamese nationalityDual Vietnamese-Australian citizens can renounce Vietnamese nationality through the embassy, which forwards the file to Vietnam.
- Civil registration: birth and marriageVietnamese citizen parents register the birth of a child born abroad within 60 days, and two Vietnamese citizens abroad can register their marriage at the embassy.
- Recording civil status events registered abroadVietnamese citizens abroad who registered a birth or other event with an Australian authority can have it recorded in the Vietnamese civil register; for births this must be done before a first passport for the child.
- Legalisation of Australian documents for use in VietnamSince 11 September 2026 Vietnam applies the Apostille Convention, so apostilled Australian public documents no longer need embassy legalisation; the embassy can still certify copies and Vietnamese translations.
- Certification of power of attorney, copies and translationsThe embassy certifies signatures on powers of attorney, copies against originals and translations for use in Vietnam.
- Certificate of Vietnamese originVietnamese citizens living abroad and people of Vietnamese origin holding another nationality can request a certificate confirming their Vietnamese origin.
- Ordinary passport issue or reissueVietnamese citizens abroad apply for a first passport (including newborns and people who never held one) or a replacement when the passport expires within a year, is expired, lost or damaged.
- Criminal record certificate (embassy certification step)The embassy does not issue the Vietnamese criminal record certificate; it certifies the applicant's signature and passport and ID copies so the file can be sent to Vietnamese provincial Public Security departments (which handle these since 1 March 2025).
- Citizenship registrationVietnamese citizens living overseas register with the embassy to prove and record their nationality, with an optional certificate of registration.
- Repatriation of remains to VietnamThe embassy issues the permit for bringing a body, ashes or exhumed remains to Vietnam for eligible deceased persons.
- Visa to Vietnam (e-visa, sticker and business/official visas)Foreigners apply for a Vietnam e-visa on the national portal (preferred route), which the embassy cannot help with.
- Visa-exemption certificate (5-year)Overseas Vietnamese and their foreign spouses and children can obtain a certificate that exempts them from visas for family or personal visits, valid up to 5 years (or until 6 months before the passport expires), with stays of up to 6 months per entry.
