Declarations on recovering Finnish citizenship, citizenship applications for a child or adopted child, and applications for release from Finnish citizenship can be filed through the embassy; the Finnish Immigration Service decides them.
Where to apply in Australia
Embassy of Finland, Yarralumla, Canberra (ACT), serving all of Australia; honorary consulates elsewhere in Australia do not issue visas.
Page says missions or honorary consulates may receive these, but must be filed in person.
Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Finland.
How to apply
Book an online appointment (Mon-Fri 9:30-12:30) | file the declaration or application in person | pay the processing fee, after which Migri starts handling it
Documents you need
- Forms and documents per the Finnish Immigration Service (not listed on the embassy page)
Fees and processing time
- Official fee: Citizenship declaration EUR 280 (AUD 453), e-service EUR 260; minor EUR 250 (AUD 405); release from citizenship EUR 650 (AUD 1,053); determination of citizenship status EUR 280 (AUD 453)
Good to know
Two embassy fee pages give different AUD conversions for the same EUR fees (e.g. passport EUR 235 shown as AUD 384 and AUD 381) and neither shows an effective date; fees are paid in AUD at the Ministry's exchange rate, by Eftpos/Visa/MasterCard only. Notification of retaining citizenship at age 22 can be forwarded by the mission free of charge.
