Simplified naturalisation – Hungary in Australia

Check with the office. The official pages for this service leave out some details, or are older than a year. Use this page as a starting point and confirm fees and documents before you apply.

Foreigners of Hungarian ancestry, or married to a Hungarian citizen for 10 years (or 5 years with children), can apply for Hungarian citizenship under the simplified procedure. Applicants must certify Hungarian language knowledge and have a clean record. Hungary accepts dual citizenship.

Where to apply in Australia

Embassy of Hungary in Canberra (ACT), Consular Office of Hungary in Sydney (NSW, all of New South Wales, Level 11, 309 Kent Street) and Consular Office of Hungary in Melbourne (Fitzroy North, VIC; covers Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania). Honorary consuls and periodic outreach consular days (Brisbane, Perth) handle a limited set of services.

Honorary consuls cannot handle simplified naturalisation.

Book an appointment and contact the office beforehand | submit the application (Hungarian-only forms, completed in blue pen and left unsigned until witnessed by the official) | the receiving authority in Hungary checks language knowledge and decides

Proof of Hungarian ancestry or marriage
Proof of Hungarian language knowledge

Official fee: free (AUD 0)

Good to know

Fee amounts come from the Canberra consular fee schedule PDF marked valid from 1 August 2025 (more than 12 months old); an older schedule on the same site is marked valid from 1 February 2025 with lower amounts. Fees are paid by card only. Outreach consular days (Brisbane, Perth) and honorary consuls charge higher or different amounts. Document list and processing time are not published on the page.
