India does not allow dual citizenship, so former Indian citizens who have taken Australian or other foreign citizenship must surrender their Indian passport and obtain a surrender or renunciation certificate. This is also a prerequisite for OCI applications.

Where to apply in Australia

Lodged at the Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC, run by VFS Global) for the applicant's state: Canberra (ACT), Sydney (NSW), Adelaide (SA), Melbourne (VIC and TAS), Brisbane (QLD), Perth (WA and NT). Decided by the High Commission in Canberra (ACT plus Cooma, Merimbula and Bega) or the Consulate-General covering the applicant (Sydney: NSW and SA; Melbourne: VIC and TAS; Brisbane: QLD; Perth: WA and NT).

Perth (WA and NT): since 15 Sept 2026 cancellation of an Indian passport must first be filed on the MEA e-SEWA portal (indianconsularservices.mea.gov.in); after scrutiny of about 10 working days the file is lodged with VFS Perth by appointment or courier.
