Passport for a minor / first passport for a child – India in Australia

Indian passports for children under 18, including a child's first passport (for example a child born in Australia to Indian parents who has been registered as an Indian citizen). Parental consent paperwork is needed in addition to the normal file.

Where to apply in Australia

Lodged at the Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC, run by VFS Global) for the applicant's state: Canberra (ACT), Sydney (NSW), Adelaide (SA), Melbourne (VIC and TAS), Brisbane (QLD), Perth (WA and NT). Decided by the High Commission in Canberra (ACT plus Cooma, Merimbula and Bega) or the Consulate-General covering the applicant (Sydney: NSW and SA; Melbourne: VIC and TAS; Brisbane: QLD; Perth: WA and NT).

How to apply

Fill in the online passport form for the child on the Global Passport Seva portal | check the VFS minor/first-passport checklist | book an ICAC appointment (for a newborn without a passport, VFS says to enter 00000000 or a parent's passport number) or post the file to the ICAC GPO box

Applications are handled through VFS Global - Indian Consular Application Centres (ICAC), https://services.vfsglobal.com/aus/en/ind.

Fees and processing time

Official fee: passport fee revised monthly by exchange rate, AUD amount not published
Other charges: ICWF AUD 4.00

Processing time: About 4 weeks (previous passport issued by the same mission in Australia) or about 8 weeks otherwise, per VFS averages.

Good to know

VFS lists separate categories 'First Passport for a Child' and 'Passport for a Minor'; High Commission fee schedule page shows 'last updated 21-10-2026'.
