India: Certificate/NOC for transporting mortal remains or ashes to India in Australia

  • Checked 24 October 2026

The mission issues the certificate needed to send the body or ashes of a deceased Indian national from Australia to India. Public-health clearance on arrival is handled through India's eCARe portal.

Where to apply in Australia

High Commission in Canberra and Consulates-General in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, each for its own jurisdiction (handled by the posts themselves, not VFS).

Perth (WA and NT): since 15 Sept 2026 the NOC for transporting remains (Indian passport holders) must first be filed on the MEA e-SEWA portal (indianconsularservices.mea.gov.in); after scrutiny of about 10 working days the file is lodged with VFS Perth by appointment or courier. After that, the applicant visits the Perth Consulate in person (9:30-12:30 on working days) to collect the NOC. ACT: same-day urgent cases via the High Commission emergency line.
