  • Checked 25 October 2026

Austrian passports are normally valid for ten years and include fingerprints from age 12. Every applicant, including babies, must attend in person, and each child needs their own passport. A new passport is needed after a name change.

Where to apply in Australia

Austrian Embassy in Canberra (Forrest, ACT) and the Austrian Consulate in Sydney; honorary consulates (Brisbane, Cairns, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth) certify documents but passport applications need fingerprints at the Embassy or a consulate.

Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Austria.

How to apply

Book an appointment and attend the Embassy or a consulate with the originals; postal applications are not possible. The passport can be sent back in a self-addressed prepaid envelope (registered or Express Post).
