Austria generally does not allow dual citizenship: anyone who voluntarily takes another nationality, such as Australian, loses Austrian citizenship unless a retention permit was granted in writing beforehand.
Where to apply in Australia
Austrian Embassy in Canberra (Forrest, ACT) and the Austrian Consulate in Sydney; honorary consulates (Brisbane, Cairns, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth) certify documents but passport applications need fingerprints at the Embassy or a consulate.
Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Austria.
How to apply
Apply in writing before acquiring the foreign citizenship; abroad, the application can be lodged at the Embassy for the competent provincial government, which decides strictly.
Documents you need
- Written application
- Supporting documents showing the reasons for retention
Fees and processing time
