Check with the office. The official pages for this service leave out some details, or are older than a year. Use this page as a starting point and confirm fees and documents before you apply.

A short-validity document for Italian citizens whose passport has been lost or stolen and who must travel urgently. It only allows travel back to Italy or to the country of residence.

Where to apply in Australia

Consulate General of Italy in Sydney (Level 19, 44 Market Street, Sydney NSW), for residents of NSW only (Queanbeyan and Cooma fall under the Embassy in Canberra). Honorary consulates cannot issue it; they only forward applications.

Other Italian posts in Australia (Embassy in Canberra, Consulate-General Melbourne, Consulates in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth) run their own pages for their own districts; those were not read in this research, so details here describe the Sydney procedure and may differ elsewhere.

Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Italy.

How to apply

Report the loss or theft to the police | fill in the consulate's passport loss/theft notification form | go to the consulate in person (the Sydney page states no appointment is needed) with photos and your ticket | pay by eftpos or cash

Documents you need

Fees and processing time

Processing time: Next working day unless a genuine emergency; not issued on weekends.

Good to know

Two Sydney pages describe the service; one says fee is on the Consular Fees page, the tariff (dated per Law 199/2025) treats travel documents as free apart from the form cost. Exact amount not confirmed.
