Italian citizens registered in AIRE and living in NSW apply in person for a new or renewed Italian passport. Fingerprints and the photo are taken at the consulate and the booklet is printed and handed over the same day when there are no obstacles on the consular file.
Where to apply in Australia
Consulate General of Italy in Sydney (Level 19, 44 Market Street, Sydney NSW), for residents of NSW only (Queanbeyan and Cooma fall under the Embassy in Canberra).
Other posts differ. Melbourne (Victoria and Tasmania): the consulate-general's pages describe urgent processing for justified family, health or work reasons with an extra urgency fee, and say non-AIRE applicants need Questura authorisation; booking details were not published on the page read. Brisbane (Queensland and Northern Territory): on a July 2026 notice, all 2026 passport appointment slots were taken, a new schedule is being prepared with a waiting list, and urgent cases go by email to the consulate's passport mailbox. Perth (Western Australia): passports and electronic ID cards by appointment on Prenot@mi; walk-ins on Thursdays 2:00-3:30 pm for AIRE citizens over 65 and expectant mothers; parental consent for a minor's passport by email (EU citizens). Adelaide (South Australia): in-person services by appointment, many others by email, post or the FAST-IT portal; hours Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9-13 and Wed 13-16. Canberra Embassy handles ACT, Queanbeyan and Cooma.
Contact details for every office are on the page of the embassy and consulates of Italy.
